Couple with nasal flute

Oil on fine canvas, in bad condition (not restored), 104 x 136 cm.
Signature partially erased in the bottom right of the canvas, without title, with date 1888.
Private collection.
A different artwork which is widely inspired by Japanese prints.
It shows almost the same composition as the original print which was used for inspiration, but instead of the dark outlines that usually surround the pale skinned Japanese women, here it is the opposite, the characters are men outlined in white.
It represents a voyeurism scene where a hidden person is peeping at two men sitting beside the water and playing “vivo” (nasal flute in Pacific Islands).
